The Tennis Court Oath 1789
The tennis court oath 1789 began when a small group of French nobles took a tennis court oath swearing to create a written constitution for their country. On the 17 of June 1789, the nobles returned to their rooms after breakfast to find their doors guarded by soldiers. Honore Gabriel Riqueti suspected the worst. He took a calculated guess that King Louis XVI was attacking their power and wealth and in simple words getting rid of his competition. In an action of self defense, the nobles, led by Honore Gabriel Riqueti ran to one of King Louis XVI's finest indoor tennis courts where they formed a national assembly and swore "not to separate, and to reassemble wherever circumstances require, until the constitution of the kingdom is established"
How did a tennis court make a significance in history?!
The assembly or third estate that the nobles formed was one of the first acts of revolution in French history! and it all culminated on a tennis court :-)The tennis court oath did get a little more violent as at one point one of the assembly's leaders known as Mirabeau shouted "Go tell your master that we are here by the will of the people, and that we shall be removed only at the point of a bayonet." By 1791, the grey tennis court oath times had passed over. Leaving French monarchy with less power and a constitution that could vote and debate upon laws!
