Tennis Rules and Scoring System - Tennis Court Rule

Alright, so you are not too sure how all those points add up into tennis rules and scoring system?

It is actually much simpler than the tennis scoreboard can seem! Tennis people just like to throw in fancy words to make the tennis rules scoring technique more complicated :-)

Tennis Court Rule - Here We Go!

Ok, take a deep breath and... The tennis rules and scoring system have games, which make up sets, which make up the match. Tennis Scoreboard
  • There are four points to a game. If it gets to three points all, it is called deuce.

  • Once at deuce, there are two deciding points to win the game. If you win the first point it is said to be "your advantage". If you then win the second point, you win the game. However, if you loose the second point, it goes back to the good old deuce.

  • In the first four points, if a player wins one point he or she goes to 15. So, if both players win a point it will be 15-15 or "15 all".

Winning two points is called 30. Winning three points is called 40. But the same rules apply.

  • Note: If no points have been won, instead of simply saying "zero", tennis uses the word "love!" Actually it came from the french word "l'oeuf", which means egg. However the English had other ideas of what they were trying to say and interpreted it as "Love". Must have been a funny conversation to see!

Tennis Court Rule - Sets

  • First player to get six games wins the "set". However if the score is 5-5, it then becomes the player who gets to 7 games first who wins the set. If both players win just one game and the score is 6-6, then a "tie-break" is played.

  • A tie-break is first to seven points, seven very nervous points! To make it fair, each player serves two points. Except for the first point, in which the player serves once.

To ensure further equality, the players switch sides every time a total of six points is accumulated. As usual, if the tie-break gets to 6-6, the player must win by two clear points. Whoever wins the tie-break is said to have won the set 7-6.

So Simple Rules of Tennis - The Match

The tennis rules and scoring system states, in the simple rules of tennis it states victory is winning two out of three sets. In the four grand slams, (Wimbledon, Roland Garros, U.S Open, Australian Open) the male famous tennis players play best out of five sets. The women, however, still play best out of three.
