When To Start Playing Tennis?
Just when is the perfect age to start tennis? When do the pros start? Are common questions and there is no single answer. It really depends on where your wanting to go with your tennis. If your striving for the Top 100 in the world then it is a good idea to keep in mind that most professionals started before the age of 6.
Nadal
was all ready winning pro tournaments at 16 and Becker won Wimbledon at 17! Other professional tennis players such as
Agassi
began picking up their first tennis racquets before they could even walk. Why so early? One of the first muscles humans develop are those of their eyes, and much in the same way as a child effortlessly learns languages at an early age he also can effortlessly develop coordination. However, that should not stop you from playing tennis! Plenty of pros started at latter ages such as Vince Spadea (who actually has the record for most consecutive losses now) but that is neither here nor there, started tennis at the grand old age of 14. Either way, it is a great activity for fitness and mental strength and many tennis coaches can receive good pay. For those talented amateurs that don't make a high paid professionals, there are leagues in Europe that pay you to represent their club or you could pick up an ATP point which always looks good on your resume. First Tennis For Beginners Steps Step 1 If you have not received any previous coaching then you have to get a local tennis coach to show you the basic techniques and only once you have learned the fundamentals... Step 2 It is time to employ the reading, watching, and praticing as much tennis as possible part! Those coca-cola adds "sleep, drink, eat tennis" are a funny and good moto to go by. Step 3 Is the step to start learning some specific
tennis drills for beginners
and
baseline tactics
that will help you improve as fast as possible. They will also help you to win as hitting balls and playing tennis are two very separate things.
Buying A Tennis Racquet
Your first racquet does not have to be a professional racquet but it should be an "adult racquet" unless your extremely light or young. Under 80 pounds would be good to use the Junior racquets and a Junior racquet is any racquets under 27". In fact it is better that it is not a pro racquet, you should try and avoid...- "Head-light racquets" (racquets that have their weight based in the handle)
- Racquets with a head size under 100sq" such as
Babolat Tennis Rackets
- Racquets that are starting to weigh in at under 280 pounds
The head-light racquets are generally what the more advanced players use once they have mastered the tennis for beginners stage as they are heavier and have more control. Beginners also want a big head size for simple reasons. Anything smaller than 95sq" makes tennis for beginners difficult, it is easier to hit the ball with the larger head sizes and those racquets have a larger sweet spot which gives the player more power! Extremely light racquets are for players that are extremely light themselves. The problem is, once you start on one of these racquets its difficult to change to a proper one. So if you can, it's better never to start with one. :-) Price Fortunately tennis for beginners racquets are often at bargain prices. Aluminum racquets can be picked up for $30-70, and if you see yourself as a quick learner and don't want to be to limited by a flexible racquet like the aluminum ones... then take a jump to the graphite racquets which are $80-330.
