Net Tension

by Doug Glass
(Elon, NC, USA)

Does the Net tension play a part in how hard you serve - such as when a let occurs?

On a hard serve at low net tension, what happens next? In or Out?

Answer

Hi Doug,

Sorry for the slow reply. The net tension varies between all tournaments although there are regulations that ensure that all the nets are the same height.

With the nets that are at low tension, balls that hit the net cord have a greater chance of going over. So in a very minimal way, one could say it benefits the server :)

So when you say... "On a hard serve at low net tension, what happens next? In or Out?" I would say the serve would probably go in. Of course there are more factors involved such as which part of the net cord it hits!

I hope this is what you were looking for.

All the best,
Max

Wimbledon is an example of a Grand Slam that uses low net cord tension
