Top 10 Female Tennis Stars - Famous Tennis Players

Women's Tennis is evolving fast and Female tennis stars are emerging in numbers! As a run down, I will go through my Top 10 female tennis stars of all time!

Do not take the top 10 to seriously, Im sure there are many many arguable cases. It is meerly my opinion :-)

Well, rolling in at number 10 is:

Martina Hingis

Martina Hingis Talented? Just a smidgen... Won a Grand Slam at 15! She couldn't even drive, but instead this young Swiss girl was collecting world records like berries. (Youngest player EVER to win a Grand Slam!)

Tactics? Mix it up. She loved to sit on the baseline and change the pace of the ball, change the directions, and make the opponent miserable. Hingis did not have a lot of power, and was small at 5ft 7in.

Justin Henin

Justin Henin Justin Henin did that great little trick of retiring while you're ahead. In 2008 when she was 25, she shocked the world when she decided to call it a day. A very long day that amassed 7 Grand Slam titles. I believe she played in a time of tough competition and still shone through.

Tactics? She mastered the one handed backhand, and she used it to perfection. She could slice, drop-shot, and hit spin. Then, she could move around and play a close to perfect forehand. On top of this, she had a very versatile second serve. She could kick the serve like a donkey then attack with her forehand.

Tracy Austin

Tracy Austin This North American prodigy started tennis, practically before she could run! In fact she had the record for the youngest of the female tennis stars to win a professional tournament, and the youngest player to win the U.S Open (1979) at the age of 16.

Tactics? Austin was a defensive player. She would get balls back and hardly ever miss... Naturally this drove many of her opponents round the bend.

Monica Seles

Monica Seles Unfortunately, most people ended up focusing on "that terrible noise she's making" rather than the brilliant tennis player that she was. She was on the right track with 9 grand slam titles, until she was stabbed by a fan while playing a match against Steffi Graf. After that she never managed to win another Grand Slam.

Tactics? She loved to attack, and she could do it all day if needed. Her tactics always revolved around being in control of the point. Thus, she would attack returns and move the opponent from corner to corner. Sele's weakness was playing a good single handed stroke while on the run and her serve lacked a bit of power.

Helen Wills Moody

Helen Wills Moody Helen Wills Moody played way back in 1920 - 1930! She won 31 grand slam titles, was number one for 8 years, and never competed in a grand slam without making the finals. Surely she should be at the number one spot of these 10 historical female tennis stars? She could be, but I personally believe that the competition was slightly less fierce in those particular years.

Tactics? Back in those days tennis was not as versatile as it is today. The wooden racquets did not allow top spin and Wills' tactic was more mental than anything else. She earned the nickname "Miss Poker face" as she seemed to have ice flowing through her veins. Nothing could faze her.

Billie Jean King

Billie Jean King This is one of the female tennis stars that dominated from the 60s to the 70s. She shone through and won 12 singles grand slam titles. In addition to the singles titles, she won 27 grand slam doubles events!

Tactics? She used her road-runner speed to get every ball back and could hit hard when ever she felt like it. Her tactics were quite similar to Martina Hingis' tactics. Some would argue that Billie Jean King had a better serve :-)

Chris Evert

Chris Evert Evert really deserves to be one of the top female tennis stars. She loved the clay and won 7 French Open titles which formed only part of her 18 Grand Slam titles. To do this, she remained at the number one spot in the world for over 7 years! Yes, ridiculous!

Tactics? Evert was solid off both sides and was a great counter puncher. She would work the points well and if the opponent attacked her early on in the point... all the better! Her favorite activity was hitting passing shots and she made it look as easy as when Rafeal Nadal hits one. (Which is quite something!)

Martina Navratilova

Martina Navratilova Navratilova was a singles and doubles specialist. She collected 59 Grand Slam titles, 41 of which came from doubles! Steffi Graf came up later and prevented her continuing this historical accumulaton of titles.

Tactics? Navratilova's tactics consisted in getting to the net first. She had a serve like a canon and volleys controlled to perfection. She preferred the faster paced games.

Steffi Graf

Steffi Graf Steffi Graf currently holds the record for the second most Grand Slam singles titles won! This is either in the male or female game. Graf earned a jaw-dropping 22 titles, even though she retired early. With this in mind, anyone can imagine that she dominated the game as much as any other champion.

Tactics? She used her forehand to set up points and to send the opponents around the tennis court like puppets. Her backhand was weaker, but she seemed to always run around it and smack a never ending supply of stunning forehand winners.

Margaret Smith Court

Margaret Smith Court Out of all the male and female tennis stars, Margaret Smith still holds the record for the most grand slam singles titles won! 24. On top of this she won 38 doubles Grand Slam titles... seeing as there are only four Grand Slams a year, this astonishing record leaves no room for that ungainly thing called "losing".

Tactics? Of course all of these female tennis stars have mastered all areas, but Smith excelled above all others in her time in fitness and endurance. Her favorite shot was her forehand and she used it strategically to approach into the net!
